Why do American politics get so dirty?

In America, you here phrases like "socialist, communist, Marxist, Nazi, etc." A politician seems to get compared to Hitler every day. Do they have this kind of dirty smack talk in Europe? For a country that has never been under a dictatorship, we seem to be really quick to throw that accusation.
